IB Expo 11: the date, the place, the tickets and the musicians

That’s right folks, it is time to announce IB Expo 11! The concert will take place at Kulturhuset in Halmstad on Saturday, October 29 at 19.30. As usual, expect nothing less than a full evening’s worth of diverse and exciting music from here, there and everywhere.

As always, we are very proud to introduce you to the guests of IB Expo 11. They are (in alphabetical order):

- Aranis Trio (Jana Arns, Liesbeth Lambrecht & Joris Vanvinckenroye)

- Trey Gunn

- Jakko Jakszyk

- Morgan Ågren

With that said, here’s some more info on these extraordinary musicians.

Aranis is an acoustic chamber rock group from Belgium that devotes its time to creating and performing new, adventurous music. The music is filled with contrasts and opposing themes, dark and light at the same time. It’s beautiful and nasty, simple and complex with a personality of its own, nevertheless you can hear influences from a multitude of genres and styles. Never heard before and yet recognisable. It is through the combination of these opposing themes and influences that a contemporary and vibrant music emerges with a unique character.

At IB Expo 11, three members of Aranis will take part: flute player Jana Arns, violinist Liesbeth Lambrecht and double bass player/composer Joris Vanvickenroye. All of them have studied at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerpen (and other conservatories) and have musical projects outside Aranis. As some of you may remember, IB had the pleasure to play with Joris a couple of years ago at the library in Halmstad, a very memorable event.

Aranis have released four albums and Joris has released one CD on his own, under the moniker BASta!

Having worked with Trey Gunn in March this year, we realised we had to work with him again sooner or later, so why not sooner? Our decision was urged on by e-mails and comments by people who wanted to hear Trey perform, not just instruct. So he is returning and we are excited about that.

For those of you unfamiliar with Trey Gunn’s work, he started off as a pianist, was trained as a classical composer, picked up the guitar and eventually began playing touch guitar. Over the years, Trey has worked with The League of Crafty Guitarists, King Crimson, Pat Mastelotto, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Tool, Matt Chamberlain, John Paul Jones, KTU and many others.

Guitarist, vocalist, producer (and much more) Jakko Jakszyk certainly falls into the category “artist deserving of more attention”. Encompassing art-rock jokers 64 Spoons (“Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights”) the Stiff record label, dalliances with several Canterbury sound legends, a spell with Level 42, work with Mick Karn, award-nominated BBC documentary maker, and of the King Crimson alumni project, 21st Century Schizoid Band, Jakko’s musical career has been nothing if not eclectic.

Jakszyk (pronounced Jack-Chick by the way) cut his teeth listening and playing along to Crimson, Henry Cow and Soft Machine albums back in the early 70s, cultivating a prodigious technique that would see him working with many of his schoolboy heroes many years later (Dave Stewart, Hugh Hopper, Robert Fripp, Mel Collins, Ian McDonald, Danny Thompson, Ian Wallace any more).

In May this year, Jakko was the catalysing force behind a new King Crimson ProjeKct, the album A Scarcity of Miracles credited to Jakko Jakszyk, Robert Fripp and Mel Collins (helped out by Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison). Just like Jakko’s solo effort The Bruised Romantic Glee Club (re-released in 2009), A Scarcity of Miracles comes highly recommended. Our fellow Swede Morgan Ågren got on with us like a house on fire and made some stirring improvisations with Trey Gunn and Henry Kaiser, so just like the case with Trey, we asked Morgan to work with us again. This time you will have the opportunity to witness the full impact of this master drummer live and kicking!

Morgan’s resume is impressive to say the least. He has played with Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Dweezil Zappa, Mike Keneally, Terry Bozzio, Glenn Hughes, Tony Iommi, The Flesh Quartet, Fredrik Thordendal, Lars Hollmer and of course long-time musical partner Mats Öberg, to name but a few.
